Frequently Asked Questions
Most frequent questions and answers about our Kid’s Martial Arts Program
Will My Child Become A Bully?
A cornerstone of our kids and teens martial arts classes at Urban Edge Martial Arts in North York is instilling respect. We place a major emphasis on teaching our students when to use their self-defense skills, and more importantly, when not to.
We see it every day: our students develop the quiet confidence to stand up to bullying, while also learning the humility and kindness that defines a true martial artist. It’s not just about kicks and punches; it’s about building character and confidence in North York’s youth.
Do Parents Need To Stay?
While we don’t require parents to stay during classes, we welcome you to watch your child’s progress from our dedicated viewing area. Please note that seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
We encourage involvement because parents who are engaged in their teen’s martial arts journey often build a stronger connection, sharing in the pride of each new skill mastered and belt earned. Fostering these supportive relationships and building strong family units is at the heart of what we do for our North York community.
What Do I Need To Bring To My First Lesson?
Come dressed in comfortable clothes you can move and sweat in! Athletic wear like a t-shirt and track pants or shorts is perfect.
Please remember that all our training is done in bare feet. And don’t forget a water bottle to stay hydrated!
You’ll find that our martial arts classes for youth and teens at Urban Edge Martial Arts here in North York are an incredible workout and a whole lot of fun. Most of our students are grinning from ear to ear by the end of class—we’re sure you will be too!
My Child Has ADHD, Will Martial Arts Help?
Absolutely! One of the greatest strengths of martial arts is that it’s an individual journey, pursued within a supportive group environment. We see our students consistently improve their focus, self-control, discipline, and social skills.
The best part? They’re often having so much fun, they don’t even realize that’s what our highly trained instructors are intentionally fostering in every class!
The best way to see it for yourself is to take advantage of our limited-time offer. Our dedicated team is passionate about helping your child become a more confident and disciplined version of themselves.

My Child Is Not Athletic, Will They Feel Left Out?
Not at all. In fact, you’ll find martial arts is the perfect activity for kids and teens who don’t consider themselves “sporty.” Our classes are unique—they focus on individual growth within a supportive group environment.
The journey from white belt and up is personal and different for every student. What they all share, however, are the incredible gains in coordination, balance, focus, and self-discipline. Plus, they get to make lots of great friends along the way!
Our instructors are highly skilled at connecting with youth and teens. Helping them discover their confidence and capability through martial arts isn’t just their job—it’s their genuine passion
My Child Is Addicted To Computer Games, Will This Be Suitable?
This is one of the BEST activities for kids and teens who spend a lot of time sitting!
Getting them active in a way that feels more like fun than exercise is our specialty. Kicking and punching pads is an incredible stress reliever, and the confidence gained here helps them blossom in all areas of their life.
Many North York parents tell us that after starting martial arts, they see a happier, more focused, and socially confident young person emerge. You’ll be thrilled you got them started.
PLUS… let’s be honest, most kids and teens think learning to move like a ninja is pretty awesome!
